RUSSIERésumé : L'intitulé exact de cette pièce est Symphonie no 2, en si Majeur,« dédiée à Octobre » (op. 14). Créée le 6 novembre 1927 à Léningrad sous la direction de Nicolaï Malko. Elle fut composée sur commande pour le dixième anniversaire de la Révolution ; originellement Chostakovitch voulait l'intituler « poème symphonique ». Écrite d'un seul tenant, elle se conclut par un chœur sur un texte d'A. Bezymenski... « Nous allions demander du travail et du pain. » Chostakovitch déclara avoir voulu exprimer dans cette œuvre « le pathos de la lutte et de la victoire ». Son esthétique constructiviste représentative des orientations modernistes de l'époque (comme la Deuxième symphonie de Prokofiev, Octobre de Roslavets, Monument Symphonique de Gnessine, Zavod de Mossolov), les recherches d'effets sonores particulièrement crus et intenses (du fait d'énormes superpositions de lignes indépendantes), l'ont fait par la suite dénigrer par la critique officielle soviétique, - qui l'a mise sur le compte des « maladies infantiles » et du formalisme typiques du proletkult, et en a stigmatisé « l'absence d'émotion ».
