POEMEIndex. décimale : 210.1 Orchestre d'harmonie seul Résumé : Cette composition s’inspire d’un poème irlandais, Le Voyage de Bran, qui raconte l’histoire de Bran, le fils de Febal, parti à la recherche d’un Autre Monde, ou l’Île des Bienheureux – une sorte de paradis caché.Un jour, en se promenant, Bran entend une musique si merveilleuse qu’elle le berce jusqu’au sommeil. À son réveil, voyant un beau rameau d’argent à côté de lui, il le ramasse avant de rentrer chez lui. Là, une femme de l’Île des Bienheureux apparaît soudainement. Elle chante une chanson parlant d’un pays où poussent des arbres avec des branches d’argent (la Chanson de l’Autre Monde). Dans ce pays il fait toujours beau, les gens ne sont jamais malades et ils ont toujours de quoi manger et boire. La femme dit à Bran qu’il doit traverser la mer jusqu’au Pays des Femmes. Le lendemain, Bran rassemble un équipage pour l’accompagner.Bran et ses compagnons arrivent d’abord à l’Île de la Joie, où les habitant rient et les dévisagent mais ne répondent pas à leurs questions. Lorsqu’un homme met pied à terre pour explorer les lieux, il se met aussi à rire et à regarder les autres fixement.Bran met à nouveau les voiles et arrive au Pays des Femmes, mais il hésite à jeter l’ancre ici. La reine des femmes lui lance une pelote de fil magique qui colle à sa main et elle réussit ainsi à tirer le bateau sur le rivage. Là, chaque homme est uni à une femme, et Bran à la reine.Les hommes restent au Pays des Femmes beaucoup plus longtemps qu’il ne leur semble, insouciants et festoyant souvent, jusqu’à ce que l’un d’eux ait le mal du pays. Mais la reine des femmes n’est pas prête à les laisser partir et les avertit qu’ils ne reverront jamais les côtes d’Irlande. Bran et ses compagnons repartent vers leur pays mais, à leur arrivée, personne ne les reconnaît. Lorsqu’un des hommes met pied à terre, il se change immédiatement en poussière. Bran et son équipage s’éloignent à jamais de l’Irlande.Dans cette œuvre, la Chanson de l’Autre Monde constitue une sorte de motif qui apparaît dans de nombreuses variantes : en canon, augmenté et diminué, altéré et, enfin, sous forme rétrogradée.
