Auteur Edvard Hagerup GRIEG (1843-1907)

Né à Bergen le 15 juin 1843, Edvard Grieg fut un des plus grands compositeurs que la Norvège ait connus. Il apprit la musique avec sa mère qui était pianiste professionnelle. Par la suite, il entra au Conservatoire de Leipzig. C'est le compositeur Niels Gade qui l'encouragea à écrire. Grieg avait un intérêt marqué pour la musique folklorique norvégienne. Entre 1866 et 1876, il vécut à Oslo où il enseigna la musique et devint chef d'orchestre pour la Philharmonic Society. C'est à cette époque (1867) qu'il épousa sa cousine, la chanteuse Nina Hagerup. Les úuvres de Grieg, axées sur la musique folklorique se heurtèrent aux critiques conservateurs de l'époque, ce qui empêcha le compositeur d'acquérir de la notoriété dans ce milieu. Plus tard, Grieg fut fortement encouragé par le compositeur Franz Liszt.Grâce à une bourse annuelle offerte par le gouvernement norvégien en 1874, Edvard Grieg put se consacrer entièrement à la composition. L'oeuvre qui contribua le plus à faire mondialement connaître son auteur fut la suite orchestrale "Peer Gynt" (1875), sujet emprunté à un drame poétique d'Henrik Ibsen. En 1877, il vécut à Lofthus, dans une petite cabane. La simplicité du logement n'était pas du à la pauvreté, mais au besoin d'isolement de l'artiste. En 1885, il s'installa définiment à la villa Troldhaugen qu'il fit construire près de Bergen. Il y mourut en 1907.Edvard Grieg fut très influencé par les grands compositeurs allemands, dont Robert Schumman, ainsi que par le compositeur franco-polonais Frédéric Chopin. Par son style folklorique, il évoquait bien l'atmosphère de son pays et nous a laissé de riches úuvres dont Heart Wounds, The Last Spring et Holberg (pour orchestre à cordes). Landsighting et Olaf Trygvason (pour choeur et orchestre), ainsi que de nombreuses pièces pour piano, dont le Concerto pour piano et orchestre en la mineur., alias : Grieg Edvard
