Compositeur tchèqueDvorak apprend à jouer du violon avec l'instituteur du village et à douze ans, il est maître de choeur. A l'âge de seize ans, son oncle lui permet d'entrer dans la classe d'orgue du Conservatoire de Prague; il joue comme violoniste dans un petit orchestre.1862-71 Il est altiste à l'Orchestre du Théâtre National de Prague, parallèlement, il commence à composer.1873 Première oeuvre importante qui le fait connaître, Hymnus pour choeur mixte et orchestre. C'est à cette époque qu'il joint le mouvement autonomiste tchèque.1873 Il est organiste à l'église Saint Aldabert à Prague. Il épouse Anna Cermakova avec laquelle il aura six enfants.1874 Il rencontre Brahms (qui le met en contact avec l'éditeur Simrock) et le chef d'orchestre Hans von Bülow; sa renommée de compositeur s'étend et les élèves affluent.1875 Dvorak reçoit le Prix de l'Etat autrichien pour sa Symphonie en mi bémol.1880-1881 Son Stabat Mater et sa Symphonie en ré Majeur font de lui en quelques mois le principal compositeur tchèque.1884 Dvorak remporte un succès prodigieux à Londres avec son Stabat Mater; il sera fait Doctor of Music honoris causa de l'Université de Cambridge.1890-1891 Il est nommé professeur de composition au Conservatoire de Prague.1892-1895 Dvorak dirige le Conservatoire national de New-York. C'est aux Etats-Unis qu'il composera son oeuvre la plus célèbre La Symphonie du Nouveau Monde.1895 Dvorak déclenche une controverse qui durera plus de vingt ans en déclarant dans un article que les Américains sont nettement en retard dans le domaine musical et que la voie du salut, selon lui, réside dans le développement d'un style national basé sur les mélodies des Noirs et des Indiens.1901 Il démissionne de son poste à New-York et dirige le Conservatoire de Prague. Il est nommé membre à vie du parlement autrichien.Son oeuvre est énorme (des opéras, de la musique de chambre, de la musique chorale, des symphonies...), et sa musique se caractérise surtout par une constante inspiration du folklore tchèque. Dans la forme musicale, il subit les influences - parfois contradictoires - de compositeurs tels que Brahms, Liszt et Wagner., alias : Dvorák Antonín
